An Irreversible American Crisis

Article / letter by Barbara Vickroy and Frosty Wooldridge

Septeber 16, 2003

If you read this week's Newsweek Magazine, it features a disturbing front page picture, 'CALIFORNIA IN CRISIS'. Time Magazine ran, 'THE USA IS RUNNING OUT OF ENERGY'. OUTSIDE Magazine featured, 'WE'RE RUNNING OUT OF WATER'.

Last week on the way back from Alaska, we traveled from northern California to San Francisco. What started out as a pleasant drive became a nightmare of grid locked traffic, sprawl, foreign languages we couldn't understand in my own country, polluted water, $2.30 a gallon gas and filthy air.

America stands at a critical crossroads of a dilemma that once its grown past our ability to manage it, we will suffer an irreversible crisis. Our population explodes beyond 'carrying capacity' with each added individual that now totaling 290 million in America. We're suffering from an avalanche of growth. Yet, each perfect individual pleads his or her innocence. We're heading for an added 200 million Americans just past mid century.

Overpopulation will become the 'Plague of the 21st Century' in America and the world. Since the American female stands at 2.03 fertility, we sustain a stable population. However, at the current rate of unrestricted illegal and legal immigration-driven-growth at 3.3 million people added annually, our country is importing an irreversible crisis. Bangladesh, China and India ignored their accelerating populations 50 years ago. Today, they can't 'fix' their problems. Their citizens suffer horrific consequences in every aspect of their daily lives.

Let's examine Newsweek's 'California In Crisis' and see how it applies to Colorado and every Western State. California suffers 35 million people on its way to 55 million in 30 years. It adds 600 cars daily to its already clogged highways. No one drinks tap water safely. Two million of its students study in trailers because they don't have enough classrooms. California must build ONE new school per day to keep up with the influx of 3,000 immigrants and their kids added every 24 hours. Over 60,000 illegal immigrants flood over our borders daily which adds up to over three million in California today and 10 million nationwide. California must staff those schools with teachers who can speak 60 languages. They are failing as the worst school system in America when they were once the best. What is happening in California will avalanche into Colorado.

Democracy needs an educated population with a similar moral/ethical foundation that speaks the same language. How will democracy survive an illiterate population with 60 tongues? As a harbinger state of overpopulation, California is 38 billion dollars in debt with no solutions with a tax base destroyed millions working under the table but still using our services. American citizens who enter an emergency room must wait for 4 to 8 hours for care because SO many people are backed up ahead of them. Some have died.

In one of my op-eds published by the Denver Post, May 8, 2003, 'TOO MANY PEOPLE, TOO FEW SOLUTIONS', I quoted 4 million people added to Colorado in 50 years to give us 8 million. A 59 year old man in California responded, "You are wrong, sir. I am among 1 to 2 million babyboomers who will retire within 10 years. We will flee the population cesspool that California has become and move to Colorado's Western slope. You can expect 6 million people in your state."

Colorado will not survive 6 million more people nor will America Survive an added 200 million added to our present population of 290 million. We're already exceeding our 'carrying capacity' and water is that limiting reality.

Our country surges into an unsolvable crisis if we don't stabilize US population by reducing legal immigration to 100,000 per year and stop illegal immigration completely while deporting the 10 to 15 million illegals already here. Since they come from countries with no family planning, their numbers are an endless line and they take jobs away from our people and drive wages down for our citizens. They also bring countless disease such as 7,000 new cases of leprosy in the past three years, 16,000 cases of tuberculosis, thousands of cases of hepatitis A,B, and C. They also bring Chagas Disease, Exotic New Castle and customs such as female genital mutilation practices which are beyond barbaric in our society.

This is not about race, creed or color. It's about 'carrying capacity' and limitations massive numbers create. We've built a highly successful country. We must sustain its viability as a beacon for the world. If we lose our country to this accelerating irreversible crisis of overpopulation, our children will not enjoy what we've come to take for granted. As Asimov said, "Democracy cannot survive overpopulation." If you don't see this monster growing, you haven't been paying attention. None of our children will enjoy the American Dream if we fail or refuse to take action on immigration.
